Complete a Driver License or Identification Card Application
In order to save time, DMV customers can fill out the online Electronic Driver License and ID Card application before visiting a DMV field office.
Make an Application and Visit your local CA DMV office
Recommending to make an application before arriving at the local CA DMV office. By selecting Office visit appointment, you will be directed to a page and required to enter your information involving the reason for your visit, your name and telephone. After filling out the page, you will be directed to an application to schedule, view, or cancel your appointment.
Provide Proof of your Identity, Social Security Number
The administrator will check and verify your identity and SSN with Social Security Administration while arriving in the DMV office. So please make sure you already have a SSN! And please present your acceptable residency document, such as home utility bill, employment document,if you have never had a California DL or California identification (ID) card.
Pay a Nonrefundable Application Fee
The Class C fee of $35 is good for 12 months, and allows you three attempts to pass each of the required knowledge tests and driving test. If you fail the driving test, you must pay a retest fee of $7 for subsequent test and schedule the driving test for another day. If you fail the driving test three times, the application will no longer be valid and you must reapply!
Apply for a REAL ID DL
Before applying for a new driver license, you must choose between a REAL ID card and a federal non-compliant one. If you choose to get a REAL ID license, you must go into a DMV field office and present certified documents providing your ID and SSN. The REAL ID DL is used as your form of identification to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal facilities after the new federal requirements begin Oct. 1, 2020. Also, the REAL ID DL allows you to purchase firearms and ammunition. XD
Pass the Written Test
The written exam consists of 36 questions on traffic laws and signs. The information in the DMV handbook will help you pass the written knowledge exam. Before you come into DMV to take your knowledge test, practice taking one or all of the sample tests.
Pass the Road Test
Make an application of Behind-the-Wheel Drive Test with the local CA DMV office. There are three chances to pass the driving test and is no minimum waiting period between driving tests, but you must make an appointment for each one,
Once you pass your driving exam, you’ll receive a temporary driver’s license that’s good for 90 days. The DMV mails your permanent license!
